Pickup Truck Wheels Guide to Fitment and Load Ratings

Use geometry, individual specification rows, structural features and relevant test records to narrow a pickup wheel shortlist.

Start with the installation you need

A pickup wheel shortlist starts with four checks: wheel-and-tyre position, brake clearance, load rating for the exact specification, and construction suited to the intended use. A photograph answers none of them.

Describe how the truck is equipped and used. A touring ute carrying added equipment and a road-focused pickup may call for different selections, even when the preferred wheel style is the same.

Compare the inner and outer positions together

Changing width and offset together can produce a result that is easy to misread. In the worked example, 17×8 ET+30 becomes 17×9 ET+12: the nominal outer edge moves out 30.7 mm, while the nominal inner edge moves out only 5.3 mm.

The width and offset guide shows the arithmetic. Use it to locate the nominal edges, then check the actual tyre, bodywork and suspension movement.

A larger diameter does not answer every clearance question

Check both the barrel around the brake assembly and the space behind the spokes. Apex’s barrel-design explanation shows why similar headline dimensions can conceal different clearance.

Identify the brake package, including conversions. Follow the supplier’s template procedure where one is available, and have the installer check the proposed wheel-and-tyre package on the truck.

Read the load rating on the actual specification row

Look up the complete specification row, not the largest load figure on the page. A design name and diameter are insufficient: drilling and offset can appear beside different ratings.

Published ROH Crawler examplePCDOffsetPublished load per wheel
17×96×139.7ET01500 kg
17×96×114.3ET+301050 kg

The two rows are from ROH’s Crawler page, checked 28 October 2026. They are ROH’s published figures, not independent test findings or I003 ratings. They demonstrate why one range-wide maximum cannot describe every version.

For each candidate, match the rating to its specification and the vehicle and tyre requirements. A higher-rated wheel does not increase the vehicle’s permitted load.

Locate the feature behind the claim

Lip bolts and a beadlock-style appearance do not describe how a wheel retains the tyre. For a functional lock or retention feature, look for the structure that acts on the bead and the installation instructions.

Method describes Bead Grip grooves at both bead seats. That named technology cannot be assumed from another wheel’s appearance, nor used to claim the other product’s low-pressure capability or road approval.

Understand what the testing is intended to show

BBS describes design simulation and physical impact, cornering and rolling tests. These examine different aspects of a design. A photograph of a test machine does not identify the sample, conditions or result.

Connect the report to the ordered wheel: sample identity, dimensions, test conditions and results. If the design or specification changes, establish whether the evidence still covers it.

Put the complete package on the order

  • Exact wheel part number, size, finish and quantity.
  • The vehicle configuration and tyre specification used for the fitment check.
  • Load information and the agreed inspection documents.
  • Centre caps, fastening hardware, valves and TPMS items included or excluded.
  • Packaging, delivery destination, sample approval and the process for reporting damage.

For a single vehicle, start with the vehicle information page. For dealer stock, separate the quantities by specification and finish in the RFQ sheet. The pickup category provides a route to discuss current supply options.

Explore wheel options

Compare the pickup and truck wheel range and check each candidate against your vehicle, axle loads and intended use.
